The deadline recently passed for Medicare Advantage organizations to submit benefit designs under the Value-Based Insurance Design (VBID) model for next year, and plans may already be turning their attention to a new component of the model: the inclusion of a hospice benefit, which has historically been handled on the fee-for-service side of Medicare. While details of the 2021 hospice benefit are still forthcoming, officials from the CMS Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) recently outlined their expectations and goals for the program, which center largely on creating a more seamless care experience for MA beneficiaries who elect hospice.
