Pharmacy Industry Execs to Discuss Potential Savings from Site-of-Care Optimization in Jan. 24 Atlantic Information Services Webinar
Atlantic Information Services, Inc. (AIS) - January 16, 2013 - Washington, DC

: As payers try to rein in the soaring costs of specialty drugs, the pharmacy benefit generally offers many more management strategies than the medical benefit. However, site-of-care optimization is one very effective tool that can be used in the medical benefit, which covers drugs administered by a health care professional. In “Site-of-Care Strategies to Contain the Costs of Infusible Specialty Drugs,” an upcoming Jan. 24 webinar sponsored by Atlantic Information Services, Inc., publisher of Drug Benefit News and Specialty Pharmacy News, two industry leaders will discuss the specifics of site-of-care optimization strategies that can result in enormous savings in medical benefit spending on specialty drugs.

Sites of administration include physician offices, patients’ homes, infusion suites and outpatient hospitals, and different locations have different prices for the same drug at the same dose. A recent internal analysis by Walgreen Co., for instance, indicates that savings of 20% to 60% per infusion can be realized by shifting specialty infusions from higher-cost to lower-cost administration sites. With a large percentage of late-stage drugs in the specialty pipeline expected to need professional administration (perhaps as many as one-third), enormous savings may be realized by payers that can direct members to the most cost-effective site.

In “Site-of-Care Strategies to Contain the Costs of Infusible Specialty Drugs,” Raulo S. Frear, Pharm.D., director of pharmacy services for RegenceRx and Michael T. Einodshofer, R.Ph., M.B.A., director of utilization management for Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy will discuss the results of the site-of-care optimization strategies their companies have employed and how their experiences can be adopted by other organizations. In 60 minutes of presentation and a concluding 30-minute question-and-answer session, webinar attendees will learn:

  • What is site-of-care optimization for infusible medications?
  • What challenges do health plans face in managing infusible medications on the medical side?
  • What strategies can influence providers and members to utilize the most cost-efficient site of care for infusible drugs?
  • How can health plans evaluate financial savings opportunities through site-of-care optimization?
