Beyond Buy and Bill: Managing Specialty Therapies Under the Medical Benefit

March 29, 2011 Webinar - Recording and Materials

Physicians have long used the buy-and-bill process for specialty drugs they administer in their offices. And although specialty therapies can be adjudicated under both the pharmacy and the medical benefit, health plans have traditionally focused on managing only those drugs that fall on the pharmacy side and have been hands off on medical-side therapies. But as plans consider a variety of strategies to manage their skyrocketing specialty costs, some have turned their focus to those physician-administered drugs. This approach is easier said than done … but, if implemented correctly, it can produce significant cost savings. Hear the details of strategies health plans are employing to effectively manage specialty drugs under the medical benefit using pharmacy benefit principles.

Hear two industry leaders discuss the details of effective new strategies for managing specialty drugs under the medical benefit using pharmacy benefit principles. You’ll get valuable perspectives on:

  • What are the financial, operational and clinical challenges in health plan efforts to manage specialty drugs that fall on the medical side?
  • What are the advantages of applying pharmacy benefit principles to specialty drugs adjudicated under the medical benefit?
  • What kind of specialty drug cost savings could health plans generate from shifting physicians from a buy-and-bill model to a single specialty pharmacy provider?
  • What are potential problems that health plans could face when making this change?
  • What drugs are the best candidates for being managed with pharmacy benefit tactics, and why? Which ones are best left under traditional medical benefit management?
  • What kind of reimbursement works best for all stakeholders when applying pharmacy benefit strategies to drugs that fall under the medical benefit? What issues must be taken into account when determining this?
  • What kind of communication with and education of providers is needed to get buy-in for such a change?
