Comprehensive employer database from the editors of AIS’s Directory of Health Plans

AIS’s Employer Health Plan Database and Directories puts a wealth of information at your fingertips, including details on the health benefits offered by multiemployer and single employer groups, with the number of plan participants and the carriers, TPAs and other vendors they have contracted with during plan year 2010.

On this user-friendly CD — and handy Executive Summary — AIS has extracted and organized millions of health insurance data points and contact information collected under the ERISA law (on Form 5500) and made them easily accessible and ready for fast analysis.

Track Plan Participation and Business Relationships

While health plan data represents a small fraction of the information collected under the ERISA law, AIS has mined this data and presented it in a way that allows you to easily:

  • See which health insurance carriers serve which employer clients.
  • Discover which employers contract with which health insurance carriers, TPAs and brokers.
  • Get details on the premiums, commissions and fees paid to each vendor/carrier.
  • Determine the makeup of the market sector for each insurance carrier by number of employer clients and participants, funding arrangements, and industries and states served.
  • Track employer health plan participation by industry and/or geography.
  • Create targeted mailing lists and call lists to network and generate leads for prospective new partners and clients.

AIS’s Employer Health Plan Database and Directories includes the database (with nine companion directories) on CD, as well as the Executive Summary. See below for tables of contents for both the Executive Summary and the CD, a list of data fields the resource contains, and sample pages.

Among the data included on the CD are:

  • Excel spreadsheets, PDF reports and mailing lists with data for: multiemployer insured and self-insured plans, single employer insured and self-insured plans, insurance carriers (linked to AIS’s Directory of Health Plans: 2012sold separately), third party administrators, insurance brokers and agents, claims processors and plan administrators.
  • NEW for this edition — an additional directory of employer-sponsored health plans by state, so you can quickly get the big picture of which employer-sponsored health plans operate in each state and who their insurance carriers are.
  • Full spreadsheets of all the data used to create the tables and charts in the Executive Summary.
  • Background information about the ERISA law and the filing process.
  • Samples of the forms, schedules and instructions used by the Dept. of Labor to collect the health plan data under ERISA.

AIS’s Employer Health Plan Database and Directories features data on:

  • 3,853 multiemployers with insured health benefits (including collectively bargained groups) covering over 66 million active plan participants representing a total of over $4.6 billion in claims and more than $4.7 billion in premiums.
  • 41,846 single employer insured plans covering over 183 million active plan participants.
  • 195 new single employer and 29 new multiemployer plans beginning in plan year 2010.
  • Almost 23,000 single employer self-insured plans covering almost 32 million active plan participants.
  • 2,020 multiemployer self-insured plans covering almost 7 million active plan participants.

Complements Industry-leading Directory of Health Plans

AIS’s Employer Health Plan Database and Directories: 2012 provides details on relationships between employers and health insurance companies as an enhancement to the information in AIS’s Directory of Health Plans: 2012. When viewed as a companion to AIS’s Directory of Health Plans: 2012 CD database, you can attain a considerably broader view of the national health insurance scene:

  • Who are the commercial clients of a given health insurer?
  • What types of employer health plans does the insurer serve in terms of size, geography and industry?
  • What proportion of the health plan’s total membership is represented by these ERISA-regulated employer health plans?
  • What funding arrangements are currently in use by which employers for health benefits?
  • How much premium revenue was collected by each carrier from each employer client during the plan year?
  • How many plan participants did an employer health plan have at end of the plan year compared to beginning of the plan year? What membership trends can be identified by industry or geography?

The employer data in AIS’s Employer Health Plan Database and Directories: 2012 corresponds with the “Commercial Risk Enrollment” and “Commercial Non-Risk Enrollment” fields in Directory of Health Plans. Links between employer health plan filings in Employer Health Plan Database and Directories and health plan records in AIS’s Directory of Health Plans: 2012 are expressed in the field labeled “MCO ID.”

AIS’s Directory of Health Plans: 2012 CD database must be purchased separately. AIS’s Employer Health Plan Database and Directories: 2012 is not linked to earlier editions of the health plan directory.

Please note that the data in each resource reflects different time periods (different policy terms and contract terms). AIS’s Employer Health Plan Database and Directories: 2012 contains health benefit data as of plan year 2010 (from ERISA Form 5500 filings), whereas AIS’s Directory of Health Plans: 2012 contains health plan enrollment data as of December 2011 (independently researched by AIS).

Whether you are researching the health plan marketplace or identifying targets for your products and services, AIS’s Employer Health Plan Database and Directories: 2012 will provide you with a tremendous competitive advantage. Order today!

Methodology

This product is based on U.S. Dept. of Labor data sets showing results from Form 5500, Form 5500-SF, Schedule A and Schedule C, filed by employers as of March 15, 2012, applicable to plan year 2010.

AIS has extracted just the data specific to health insurance benefits, and we have applied our expertise to understanding and analyzing this data in ways that we hope will be useful to our health insurance audience—including health plans, third-party administrators, consultants and vendors serving the health insurance industry.

Data in AIS’s Employer Health Plan Database and Directories are filed and submitted electronically to the Dept. of Labor by employer health plan sponsors with varying degrees of understanding of the questions asked on the forms. AIS obtains the data in its raw form and has observed myriad data integrity issues due to data entry errors, incomplete records, and occasionally flagrant disregard for accuracy on the part of employer plan sponsors. Records with insufficient or incompatible data in any given field may not be picked up by any analyses that are dependent on that field. When, in the course of analyzing and outputting the data, AIS analysts observe obviously inaccurate or conflicting data, that data is deleted from the data set so as not mislead users or skew totals. Nevertheless, AIS cannot guarantee the accuracy or veracity of any of the data displayed in this product, nor of the results obtained from analysis of this data.

Due to data integrity issues noted above, some employer health plans may be excluded from the directories or charts that are applicable to their plan type, and some employer health plans may be inadvertently included in directories or charts that are not relevant to their plan type. Likewise, carriers, third party administrators, brokers and other service providers may be misidentified by their employer clients with incorrect or incomplete names, EIN numbers, service type or contact information, resulting in these companies being excluded from appropriate directories or charts, or inadvertently included in directories or charts that are not relevant to the service they provide.

Definitions

  • Multiemployer plans are those that have filed a Form 5500 and are designated in the Labor Dept. data as multiemployer groups, Direct Filing Entities (DFEs) or multiple-employer groups that are collectively bargained. Actual funding and benefit arrangements may vary.
  • Single employer plans are employers that have filed either a Form 5500 or a Form 5500-SF and are designated in the Labor Dept. data sets as a single employer plan, or a multiple-employer plan that is not collectively bargained. Actual funding and benefit arrangements may vary. These plans are not collectively bargained.
  • Insured plans are those that have indicated an insured benefit arrangement on their Form 5500 (line 9b). In applications where plans are linked to carriers, these links are identified via accompanying Schedule A filings listing detail on the health insurance carriers that contracted with the plan during the plan year, for plans flagged via “health benefits,” “HMO” or “PPO,” or “indemnity” indicators. Includes trusts.
  • Self-insured plans are those that indicated a self-funded benefit arrangement on their Form 5500. In applications where plans are linked to TPAs, brokers or other service providers, these links are identified via accompanying Schedule C listing detail on vendors that have been flagged by the employer as claims processors or plan administrators.
  • Total Active Participants may include employees that are participating in employee benefits that are not specifically the health insurance benefit, for instance they may participate in a plan that includes health insurance and other benefits, but not be signed up to the health insurance plan specifically.
