Walgreens-Humana Dustup Reveals the Need for Impartiality in Part D Communications

A minor dustup between Walgreen Co. and Humana Inc. last month highlights the legal and regulatory minefields pharmacies and plans can easily stumble into when disseminating information on Medicare Part D products to enrollees. Walgreens allegedly crossed into that territory when it distributed a Part D plan comparison report on its website and at many of its 7,600 pharmacies that listed prices higher than Humana’s actually were. Humana filed a lawsuit on Dec. 3, 2010, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, accusing Walgreens of spreading false and misleading information about its Part D offerings .... President Obama has renominated Donald Berwick to be administrator of CMS. As he did in April, Obama is bypassing the Senate and installing him in a recess appointment....Cedar Hills Hospital in Portland, Ore., named Nicole Harrington Cirino, M.D., medical director of the Mother-Infant Outpatient Program. Harrington was medical director of the Pregnancy/Postpartum Program at Wildwood Psychiatric Resource Center in Beaverton, Ore.
