Premiums for individual non-subsidized health coverage increased 22% between 2016 and 2017 — from an average of $321 a month to an average of $393, according to a report from online insurance seller eHealth, Inc.

Annual deductibles, however, remained about the same, decreasing by an average of just 1% between 2016 and 2017. For 2017, individual policies had an average annual deductible of $4,328 ($8,352 for family coverage, up 5% from 2016). The average cost of family coverage for 2017 is $1,021 — up 23% from a year ago.

eHealth’s Price Index is based on thousands of health insurance applications submitted by eHealth shoppers during the first two months of the 2017 open enrollment period (between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, 2016). These figures do not include data from individual or family health insurance shoppers who applied for federal premium subsidies.

Among eHealth shoppers, bronze was the most common metal level selected for both individual and family health insurance. Nearly half of all shoppers (44%) selected a bronze-tier plan, while just 2% enrolled in a platinum plan. About one-third of shoppers picked a silver-tier plan, and 10% chose gold. The average monthly premium for an individual bronze plan was $388 — $40 more than average premiums for a silver-tier plan.

HMOs Are Most Popular

About half (51%) of shoppers picked an HMO plan, while 23% enrolled in a PPO. Another 19% chose an exclusive provider organization (EPO) plan. Plans eligible for use with a Health Savings Account (HSA) accounted for 25% of all plans selected by consumers (see story, p. 1).
